Prominent Ear Aesthetics

The prominent ear is one of the most common ear deformities today. It is mostly caused by the laxity of the cartilages in the ear area or insufficient ear folds. For these reasons, the ear, which has a loose structure, leans forward or to the side.

Although this condition is usually seen in both ears, in some cases it can be seen in only one ear. Thanks to prominent ear aesthetics, unwanted images can be corrected.

The fact that the ears are not in the right position with respect to your head can create aesthetic dissatisfaction. With a very simple operation, the prominent ear image can be completely changed.

At What Ages Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?

Prominent ear surgery is performed after ear development is completed. This surgery can be performed in children aged 4-6 years, since the anatomical structure of the ear is completed. If necessary, prominent ear correction is also performed for adults.

Ear shape is corrected by various aesthetic methods. The 2 most common methods used in prominent ear surgery are as follows.

  • Cutting the ear cartilage
  • Folding of cartilage without cutting

In both methods, a small incision is made behind the ear. The cartilage can be easily corrected through this incision. After the operation, the incision is sutured. Aesthetic surgery is usually performed with local anesthesia. However, general anesthesia can also be applied to make children more comfortable during the surgery. In most cases, adults can go home after surgery, but usually children are not discharged for another day. Depending on the surgery situation, you may stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 days.

On Whom Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?

Prominent ear aesthetics is performed when the ears are not in the correct position relative to your head. Some of these deformities may be as follows.

  • protruding ears
  • Abnormally large auricles
  • Forward-leaning ears

Under normal circumstances, the outer part of the ears should form an angle of fewer than 35 degrees relative to the head. When this angle is more than 35 degrees, the ear tip becomes more prominent. This condition is known as the prominent ear.

Prominent Ear Treatment

Although prominent ears in adults can be hidden by gluing them to the back with headbands or various adhesives, these are not permanent solutions. Adhesives used for this purpose may pose allergic or carcinogenic risks. In newborn babies, it is possible to correct prominent ears without surgery. The first three days are critical for this fix to be successful. Because when the hormones begin to decrease, the ears become hard and non-surgical prominent ear correction fails. In approximately 60% of newborn babies, a probable prominent ear diagnosis can be easily made immediately after birth.

According to the results of scientific research, 10% of patients have genetic prominent ear disease. However, there is no genetic rule that every person with prominent ears will have a child with prominent ears. Likewise, people who do not have prominent ears can have children with prominent ears.

With prominent ear treatment, it is aimed to change the shape of the ear. It is tried to obtain a more pleasant image by correcting the angle of the ears with respect to the head. With prominent ear aesthetics, stitches are placed where the ears meet the head, and the angle is narrowed and the shape of the ear that is open to the front becomes more closed. For the aesthetic problem caused by the absence of folds in the upper parts of the ears, sutures are placed on the cartilage and the flat appearance in this part is destroyed by bending. It is aimed that the ears have a natural, symmetrical and pleasant appearance. The operated ear takes its final shape in a few months.
